Ingredients for Ethel's Sugar Cookies:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt

Ingredients for Butter Cream Frosting:

  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons milk

Instructions:

  1. Mix butter, shortening, sugar, eggs, and vanilla thoroughly
  2. Stir flour, baking powder, and salt together
  3. Blend butter mixture and flour mixture
  4. Chill dough at least 1 hour
  5. Heat oven to 400 degrees
  6. Roll dough until it is 1/8 inch thick
  7. Cut with your favorite cooky cuter
  8. Place onto parchment paper lined baking sheets
  9. Bake 6 to 8 minutes
  10. Cool on a wire rack
  11. Cool completely and frost with butter cream frosting

Notes:

I prefer to roll out the dough to about 1/8 inch thick, verse the 1/4 inch thick the recipe suggested. I like a thinner cookie and can get more cookies out of a batch of dough.
